México and the TPP: a critical view on diversification and intellectual property

Background The full Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) document was released one month after the announcement of its conclusion on October 5, 2015. The published text confirmed some fears1 but also brought relief as the details of what had been negotiated by twelve very diverse countries on the Pacific Rim became known.2 The text has being analyzed by legislative bodies, their constituencies, stakeholders and civil society organizations to assess the convenience of joining the partnership and to address possible challenges in its implementation, including recent announcement by President-elect Donald Trump that the US would withdraw from the TPP. Since the text can no longer be modified, the only option at this point is whether or not to join. Nevertheless, such a decision is difficult because, as to be expected, parts of the agreement are favorable while others are not.
